HEDIMED @ EASD2024

A quick throwback into EASD2024, held in Madrid in 9th-13th September:

This year, EASD brought together a large and engaged audience of more than 12,000 people, with particular interest in Type 1 Diabetes. The event, designed to bridge the gap between scientific discoveries and public health, featured key presentations and discussions about the disease. HEDIMED science also took the stage in different sessions.

During the week, three HEDIMED scientists presented their scientific inputs for Type 1 Diabetes. Lars Stene (Norwegian Institute of Health) presented their publication for Maternal psychosocial stress and risk of childhood-onset type 1 diabetes and German Tapia (Norwegian Institute of Health) shared their results with Relative protection of maternal versus paternal type 1 diabetes on child’s risk of type 1 diabetes -theme.

EASD vibes: Science, presentations, and a whole little community for Type 1 Diabetes research

In addition, HEDIMED Project Coordinator Heikki Hyöty had an invited presentation about the role of exposome in type 1 diabetes. “Infections have long been suspected of playing a pivotal role in the development of type 1 diabetes and other immune-mediated diseases,” said Dr. Hyöty. “Research is increasingly pointing to specific mechanisms by which viral and bacterial agents may contribute to the onset of conditions like type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, and allergic disorders. Better knowledge in this could have profound implications for prevention and early intervention.

The event also included a lively stakeholder event organized by INNODIA, where patient advocacy groups, healthcare professionals, biotech companies and research institutions exchanged ideas on how to translate these scientific breakthroughs into practical solutions for early diagnosis, cure and prevention of type 1 diabetes.

To wrap it together, a lot is to be discovered, but a little more groundwork for the future research has been established!
