About
Dr Panu Rantakokko works in the Chemical Risks Team of Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) that is responsible analysis of environmental contaminants within HEDIMED. Team has the capacity to analyze a large variety of industrial chemicals and their by-products from various human and environmental matrices including dioxins, PCBs, perfluorinated substances, flame retardants, phthalates, bisphenols etc.
Exposure assessment and human biomonitoring aims to study the possible human health effects of contaminants. Health studies of Chemical Risks Team have focused on type 1 and 2 diabetes and related conditions, cancers and neurodevelopmental, reproductive, and degenerative disorders.

DIETARY FACTORS TEAM
About
Professor Suvi M Virtanen and her research group have in-depth expertise in nutritional epidemiology, especially maternal and childhood nutrition. Her group has been developing and applying methods in longitudinal data collection, food composition databases and data analysis. Professor Virtanen has been responsible in dietary data collection in several large cohorts. Her group has identified several dietary risk or protective factors in the risk of islet autoimmunity, type 1 diabetes or asthma, and contributed to dietary recommendations.
In HEDIMED, her group (including Leena Hakola, PhD) will coordinate the dietary data harmonization and participate in studies that include dietary factors.
